New Paths To Healing: Exploring Hypnosis for PTSD
Apr 01, 2024New Paths To Healing: Exploring Hypnosis for PTSD
In my practice as a consulting hypnotist, I've been privileged to assist many individuals on their journey to improved emotional health, including those battling PTSD.
Hypnosis for PTSD can play a powerful role in this process, and I'd like to share how this approach can offer hope and transformation for people seeking relief.
What is PTSD?
Before we consider how Hypnosis for PTSD works and the therapeutic process I follow with my clients to help them, it’s important to set out what is meant by Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).
PTSD is a challenging condition triggered when a person experiences or witnesses an event which was terrifying to them.
Symptoms of PTSD can include flashbacks, nightmares, severe anxiety and uncontrollable thoughts about the event.
Importantly, PTSD is not just a result of shocking military experiences where it was once categorized as "shell shock" or "combat fatigue", but it is also experienced by civilians who've suffered or witnessed traumatic incidents such as natural disasters, accidents, violent assaults, or severe emotional loss.
PTSD affects a person’s daily functioning, including emotional response, relationships, and physical health. A comprehensive, accessible and compassionate treatment approach is needed and hypnosis can help.
An Insight Into How Hypnosis for PTSD Works
When someone is entering a hypnotic state they become more and more deeply focused which means they are able to pay attention to their innermost thoughts.
This level of focused concentration allows a client to close down the conscious mind and permit the subconscious to process unhelpful thoughts, and accept new positive ones in a safe and controlled environment. As these positive thought and feelings are established they are able to reconcile the memories of past trauma and place them truly in the past and no longer fear reliving them in the here and now.
How The Treatment Process Using Hypnosis For PTSD Works
One of the basic principles of my practice is recognizing the individuality of each person's experience. Sessions always evolve to meet the client’s changing needs.
One of the reasons I love using hypnosis on-line is the client is already in their own familiar surroundings and we can work together to identify other factors which can help this trust and sense of security develop. Especially when working with those who are dealing with PTSD, who are less likely to experience an episode in surroundings they, themselves, control.
Healing PTSD Beyond the Personalized Session.
All my hypnosis clients receive customized audio recordings so they can experience self-hypnosis on a daily basis. These recordings serve as a continuous therapeutic touchpoint, reinforcing the work done during sessions and promoting healing processes outside the hour or so we have in session.
These recordings serve as gentle reminders of the strategies discussed in their sessions and help PTSD sufferers embed new patterns of thought and behavior more firmly into their subconscious, faster.
Sustainable Change
The goal of hypnotherapy for PTSD is not just to alleviate symptoms in the short term but to encourage lasting change that promotes overall well-being.
This approach involves gently guiding clients towards healthier habits and thought patterns, avoiding any sense of deprivation or loss. This is crucial, as feeling deprived can lead to resistance and can undermine the healing process.
Hypnosis cannot erase the traumatic event but allows the client to find balance and supports a more fulfilling life, free from the constraints of the past trauma.
The Importance of a Holistic Approach
My practice emphasizes the importance of a holistic approach to healthcare, this is especially true of PTSD which may have been an issue for a long time. This means not only focusing on the symptoms but also understanding and addressing the underlying causes and factors that contribute to the disorder.
Consulting with healthcare professionals and ensuring a coordinated approach to treatment is essential, so each client's unique needs and circumstances can be met and relief achieved.
Final Thoughts
The journey of healing from PTSD is a deeply personal and unique experience for each individual.
Through my work, I've witnessed remarkable transformations when individuals allow themselves to trust the process. It offers a path to rediscover a sense of peace and empowerment.
Hypnosis for PTSD empowers the client to explore and reprocess traumatic memories in a safe and controlled environment, promotes positive behavioral changes, and supports continuous engagement with therapeutic content outside of therapy sessions.
If you're considering hypnosis as a part of your healing journey, I encourage you to get in touch.
Together, we can explore how this therapeutic approach might serve as a valuable tool in your recovery, helping to light the way forward towards healing and renewal.
