Why We Resist Change:The Comfort of the Status Quo

Here we are moving toward summer rapidly

and how many of us are thinking "I was supposed to be 'X' by now". 

Maybe  'X' stands for thinner, or healthier or in a new job.  It can be anything you have consciously told yourself you want to achieve, and yet change comes hard.

Truth be told, whatever behavior, wanted or not, is part of our comfort zone and the subconscious is always trying to keep us safe in that zone.  We seldom stick to a new behavior for very long without some serious positive reinforcement or remarkable willpower.  When the conscious mind takes a break the old behavior reappears.

Change, it’s what hypnotists spend their working hours doing; helping clients make the changes they really, consciously, want.  From shedding weight, being comfortable on the stage, stopping smoking, driving on the highway without panicking,  and a multitude of other issues, getting the subconscious to cooperate- that’s what we do. 

On any given day, it is estimated, an adult makes between thirty-three and thirty-five  (33-35,000) decisions.  Most of those are made at the subconscious level, the things done every day, routinely, without thinking, and that give an unsettled feeling if something interrupts the pattern.  As a small child you inherited from trusted caregivers many of these ‘knowns’, and over the ensuing years you have added many others by consciously doing/thinking them until they have become habits you no longer have to actively think about.   Your subconscious fiercely protects this comfort zone territory.  After all, you have been doing this thing in this particular way for a long time, and you are still here,  so that must be what you are supposed to do.

If you consciously want to do something different,  you already know you will have to summon will-power and pay attention. And if you have ever been unsuccessful, you also know this is not as easy as it sounds. The conscious mind goes off-duty multiple times a day especially when we are physically tired and we slip back into old habits, mindlessly eating a cookie, letting the TV episode roll on into the next when you had every intention of practicing yoga.   It’s natural for these things to happen but there is no need to throw in the towel. Give yourself grace and just start where you left off…

Hypnosis can help

A hypnotist can assist you in relaxing to the point when you are right at the edge of sleep, your conscious mind is on yet another break, but the subconscious can still hear the suggestions made to you.  This is why so many of us give custom-made self-hypnosis audios to our clients to listen to at bedtime, reinforcing the suggestions given in a session.  

Step-by-step slip in a tiny piece of the change you want and your subconscious will accept and the conscious, analytical, mind will not object. Too many suggestions and the subconscious will resist or the  conscious mind snap back to critique.

With the right tools, such as hypnosis, success can be achieved.

Remember change is not an overnight process. It requires patience, self-compassion, and a willingness to embrace the discomfort of the unfamiliar at least for a short time. Through the gentle guidance of hypnosis, we can coax our subconscious minds into alignment with our conscious desires, paving the way for lasting change and fulfillment.
